This is the same as the basic starting chain in crochet, except you are using a crochet hook instead of your fingers. Crochet means hook in French and this is the name given to the craft amongst French, Italians and Spanish speakers. The average crochet hook is six inches, but Afghan hooks come in 9, 14, and 20 inch lengths.
Why not learn to crochet? There is only your yarn and a crochet hook, and possibly a crochet pattern, to carry. When you are really stuck and just do not understand the directions of the pattern, or how to do a stitch, then have them show you.
Crochet pattern e-books are great value and very convenient. It is also fun to work with the different yarn colors and textures.
